Steptronic is a shift function for predominantly automatic transmissions with torque converters that for BMW, MG, MINI– and Rover models. Recently, it can also be found on semi-automatic transmissions. It came onto the market in the mid-1990s. To switch to manual mode, move the lever to the “S” or “M/S” position. You can move up or down by moving forward or backward. In addition, many vehicle models have buttons for activating the manual shift mode.
Unlike the Tiptronic system, Steptronic cannot work entirely manually. The on-board computer constantly monitors the speed and can take control of the transmission in certain cases, such as:
- if the drive wheels are slipping;
- when driving downhill without the pressing the accelerator pedal;
- if the engine speed drops suddenly;
- if the electronic control unit detects a fault;
- if the automatic transmission control unit fails.
Steptronic can also adapt to an individual driving style. The system remembers the driving style and automatically adapts gear changes to the driver's habits. To increase driving comfort, Steptronic offers two additional modes: „Kickdown“ (sporty) and „Stop and Go“ (economical).
